When you quickly change direction or stop while running, a large force hits the knee
When the knee collapses inward (knee valgus) on landing, the ligaments are overstressed
Without strong thigh, hip, and core muscles, the knee cannot be properly supported
When the force exceeds the limit, ligament tears or meniscus damage occurs
ACL injury prevention programs (anti-valgus training, jump landing drills) have been shown to significantly lower injury rates. Female athletes in particular should actively work on prevention. If you feel any discomfort, do not push through it — see a specialist early.
Why women are more prone to ACL injuries
1. Wider pelvis affects knee alignment. 2. Female hormones change ligament flexibility. 3. Relative lower-body muscle strength tends to be lower. 4. Greater ligament flexibility can lead to instability. For these reasons, anti-valgus training and strength exercises are especially important for women.
