Knowing what each imaging study is good at — and what it isn't

Orthopedic specialists pick from X-ray, CT, MRI, and ultrasound depending on the symptom.
Each one shows different things: some are great for bone, some for ligaments and nerves, and some can image tissues in motion.
Choosing the right test is the shortest path to an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

X-ray

Maps differences in bone density. Best for fractures, deformities, and joint space

CT

Reconstructs cross-sections from X-rays at all angles. Ideal for complex fractures and surgical planning

MRI

Uses magnetism and radio waves to image water content. Shows ligaments, discs, nerves, and early stress fractures

Ultrasound

Reflected sound waves create real-time images. Lets us watch tendons and inflammation while moving

Most scans are available the same day at our clinic

X-ray and ultrasound are performed in-house during your visit. When CT or MRI is needed, we coordinate with partner facilities and review the results with you afterwards. Repeat X-rays may be requested to compare with prior images and track changes over time.

When MRI may not be possible.
Pacemakers and certain implants are MRI contraindications. Tell us in advance if you are claustrophobic or possibly pregnant. Before any contrast-enhanced CT, we'll review kidney function and any history of asthma or contrast allergies.

  • Repeat X-rays serve a purpose — they let us track change over time
  • Different test on different days is normal: each shows different tissues
  • Always declare metal implants, pacemakers, and any chance of pregnancy
  • "Why this test?" is a great question — please ask. Understanding the plan is part of good care
